Profile

Year Started

1993

Name of Project Leader

Mr. Jett Rojas

Activities

  • Several decades before the project launching, local residents were suffering from water shortages and securing safe drinking water. These problems were associated from the destruction of the area`s former dense forests. It was then that the local people felt the need to restore the mountains` former vegetation.

  • Massive reforestation activities were done to cover the area of almost 350 hectares with Acacia mangium and mahogany in the six communities of Ajuy, Iloilo Province. In order to ensure the growth of the planted seedlings, the local residents are applying compost, do ring weeding and regularly maintaining the 10 meter fire line to prevent the spread of wild fires especially during summer.

Project Impact

  • Other than the increase in area`s vegetation cover, the residents noticed the increase and continuous flow of water from the mountains. These changes help the local farmers particularly in growing rice.
