Dec 13, 2016

On the occasion of the 20th anniversary of DOA-OISCA Agriculture and Rural Development Training Centre, located at Pakhangyi village, Magway Division, in the central region of Myanmar, OISCA International was highly commended by the Government of the Republic of the Union of Myanmar for its outstanding contribution in agricultural and rural development. The citation, signed by Dr. U Aung Thu, Union Minister of Agriculture, Livestock and Irrigation, was handed over to OISCA's President Dr. Yoshiko Y. Nakano at the celebration ceremony on November 21 at the Training Centre.

Subsequently, Dr.Nakano and her associates had a rare opportunity to meet with Daw Aung San Suu Kyi, State Counsellor and Union Minister of Foreign Affairs, at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Nay Pyi Taw, the state capital. In the meeting, the supreme Myanmar leader expressed her deep appreciation for OISCA's contribution over long years, particularly in such fields as organic farming, capacity building, and rural development in general.

Since it signed in 1996 a Memorandum of Understanding with the Government of the Union of Myanmar, OISCA has been carrying out various other projects in livelihood development, education, food security, and small scale infrastructure development. Occasionally, OISCA provided emergency support to disaster-hit areas, for instance, the southern delta region which is widely known as the major granary of the country.

A high-yielding rice varieties has been developed at the Training Center and officially recognized by the National Seed Certification Authority with the name "Pakhanshwear" meaning a "golden rice of Pakhangyi". It is now widely cultivated by farmers. Moreover, the Training Center has developed a "Dapog" method. It is a unique unconventional rice seedling nursing technique. Rice growing farmers have been encouraged to adopt this method, too. It is simple and sustainable.
